I recently presented the current stage of my research and development to my peer group at MMU, using a basic research poster to summarise and visualise my ideas.

Module tutor and practicing artist/SciArtists Dave Griffiths noted that it was interesting to parallel the Petri dish and the artist’s studio as sites for growth (I am considering this or a variation on it as a title for the project). He also mentioned Exobiology, also known as Astrobiology, which suggests that life began in the universe as microorganisms which where then distributed to different planets (including ours) on asteroids. I am really satisfied that my project can retain a small link to space!

After some discussion, the other ideas I have taken away from the crit are:

  • To video or otherwise document taking of samples from the studio, as a performative process
  • To include images or a map of the sites that the samples are taken from. I am now considering ways to include photographs under the agar, cataloguing the site/item as both a photograph and a microbiological study in one object.
