Shape and Situate:
Posters of Inspirational Women in Europe

‘Shape & Situate: Posters Of Inspirational Women in Europe’ is a collaborative zine and poster-exhibition project compiled by Melanie Maddison. The project has an open submission and showcases a wide range of artists.

The posters feature artwork and information on an inspirational or radical women of the poster maker’s choosing. The aim has been to highlight the (often hidden) history and lives of radical inspirational women and collectives from Europe, as a way of connecting us with the past and the present through a cultural articulation of these women’s lives.

I have contributed posters to issues 5 and 6 of the zine, depicting Margaret Cavendish (Duchess of Newcastle), Kate Genever and the women of Leeds Development Education Centre.

Posters from issues 5 and 6 were exhibited at the Art Space in Leeds Central Library as part of an event titled ‘Women, Visibility and Playful Acts’ on 27th Feb 2015.
Shape and Situate is produced by artist Melanie Maddison. Read more about the project here:

The exhibition was organised by F= to coincide with International Women’s Day.

I am always interested in learning more about DIY collaborative projects. Projects that work in this way subvert the hierarchy of the traditional art scene and foster inclusion from a grassroots level up. Get in touch to tell me about your project or discuss working on a similar project together.
