The new landmark exhibition Painting In Time has launched at The Tetley!

Why I love it: The exhibition comes at a significant moment in contemporary painting, when the medium is being re-evaluated, re-assimilated, and re-formed. The work challenges the idea of painting as fixed, wall-based, precious. Instead, we are invited to explore time-based, temporary, performative and participatory works of art, some of which will change throughout the exhibition and be destroyed at the close.

Some of the works look closer to sculpture or installation, and many explore painting as object and the very materiality of the medium (e.g. ‘trying to keep the paint as good-looking as it is in the tin’). Ultimately though, the exhibition is just seductive! Colours and textures that are luscious and sensory. The whole thing is playful, inviting, questioning and doesn’t take itself too seriously. A refreshing mood for a pertinent contemporary show!
